Chitkul
The last village of India — where the road ends and the Himalayas begin
Trip Overview
What’s included in your Trip Culture experience
Chitkul is the last inhabited village on the Hindustan-Tibet Road before the Tibet border. At 3,450 m, it's ancient, remote, and achingly beautiful — wooden houses draped in prayer flags, the turquoise Baspa at its feet, and glaciers above.
Chitkul is the highest inhabited village on the Hindustan-Tibet Road and the last village before the Tibet border in the Sangla (Baspa) Valley. Sitting at 3,450 m, it is remote, quiet, and profoundly beautiful. The village's traditional wooden houses — multi-storey, with carved balconies and slate roofs — look unchanged from centuries past. The ancient Mathi temple in the village center is the spiritual heart of local life. The ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) has a checkpost here, and Indian nationals can go up to the post but no further. The Baspa river, glacier-fed and turquoise, flows just below the village, and on a clear day the snowy peaks of the China-India border form a jaw-dropping backdrop. The famous 'Last Dhaba of India' sign has become one of Himachal's most photographed spots. Chitkul sees far fewer tourists than Spiti or Manali, preserving an atmosphere of genuine remoteness.

Your 3-Day Itinerary
A carefully crafted journey designed to give you the best experience. Customize as per your preferences.
Depart Shimla
Early departure on NH-5 via Narkanda and Rampur. The Sutlej gorge section is dramatic — sheer cliffs and a thundering river far below.
Karcham Turnoff
Leave NH-5 at Karcham and enter the lush Baspa Valley. The change in landscape is instant — from stark gorge to green terraces.
Arrive Sangla — Lunch
Have lunch in Sangla at a local restaurant. Try freshly caught Baspa river trout if available.
Explore Sangla & Kamru Fort
Spend the afternoon at Kamru Fort and the riverside. Overnight in Sangla — a good night's rest before an early Chitkul departure.
Drive from Sangla to Chitkul (28 km)
The 28 km drive takes 1.5 hours on a scenic but narrow mountain road through Batseri and Rakchham. The valley narrows and the peaks close in dramatically.
Arrival & First Walk
Park at the village entrance and walk in on foot. The wooden houses, narrow lanes, and complete silence immediately set Chitkul apart from anywhere else.
Mathi Temple
Visit the ancient Mathi Devi Temple — a beautifully carved wooden shrine that is the cultural heart of the village and over 500 years old.
ITBP Checkpost & Last India Post
Walk to the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) checkpost — the last point accessible to civilians. The 'Last Point of India' and 'Last Dhaba' signs here are iconic.
Lunch at the Last Dhaba
Eat Maggi, parathas, or rajma-chawal at one of the tiny dhabas while looking up at glaciers and the Tibet border range. A meal you'll remember forever.
Baspa River Walk
Walk down to the Baspa riverbank below the village. The water is impossibly turquoise from glacial minerals. Sit, photograph, or simply listen.
Rakchham Sunset Stop
On the return drive, stop at Rakchham village during the golden hour. The traditional wooden houses in evening light are a photographer's dream.
Return to Sangla
Arrive back in Sangla for dinner and overnight stay.
Drive to Reckong Peo via Karcham
Descend from the Baspa Valley back to Karcham on NH-5, then drive uphill to Reckong Peo — the Kinnaur district headquarters.
Kalpa Village
Drive 6 km above Peo to Kalpa — a hilltop village with the most iconic views of Kinnaur Kailash peak (6,050 m). Check in and have lunch.
Kalpa Walk & Orchards
Stroll through Kalpa's apple orchards and visit the ancient Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar monastery. The terraced orchards with Kinnaur Kailash behind are stunning.
Kinnaur Kailash Sunset
Watch the setting sun turn Kinnaur Kailash from white to gold to deep rose. This is one of Himachal's most spectacular sunset views.
