Kinnaur
Land of gods, apples, and the legendary Kinnaur Kailash
Trip Overview
What’s included in your Trip Culture experience
A mystical Himalayan district where Buddhist monasteries cling to cliffsides, apple orchards paint the valleys gold, and the sacred Kinnaur Kailash massif watches over all.
Kinnaur is one of Himachal Pradesh's most remote and spectacular districts, bordering Tibet. Carved by the Sutlej, Spiti, and Baspa rivers, it offers a dramatic transition from lush forests near Shimla to the stark, high-altitude Trans-Himalayan landscape near the Indo-Tibetan border. The region is famous for its apple orchards, ancient temples, Buddhist gompas, and the sacred Kinnaur Kailash peak (6,050 m), which Hindus and Buddhists both revere. The Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5) winds along near-vertical cliffs with the Sutlej gorge far below — one of India's most dramatic drives. Due to its proximity to Tibet, parts of Kinnaur require an Inner Line Permit.

Depart Shimla
Start early from Shimla on NH-5. The road follows the Sutlej river through dense oak forests.
Rampur Town
Stop at Rampur — the commercial capital of Kinnaur — for fuel, food, and a quick walk through the Padam Palace market.
Sarahan & Bhimakali Temple
Arrive at Sarahan and visit the stunning Bhimakali Temple — a masterpiece of Himachali architecture set against the Shrikhand Mahadev range.
Check-in & Evening Walk
Check into HPTDC Shrikhand Hotel or a local homestay. Stroll through Sarahan's apple orchards as the peaks turn golden.
Drive to Karcham
Head back to NH-5 and take the turnoff at Karcham into the Baspa Valley. The road climbs steeply alongside a thundering river.
Sangla Village
Arrive in Sangla — a lush green village unlike anything in Himachal. Explore the Kamru Fort and Kamakhya Devi Temple perched above town.
Lunch at Local Dhaba
Try local Kinnauri cuisine — siddu with ghee and dal, or fresh trout if available.
Batseri & Rakchham Villages
Drive further up the Baspa Valley to the traditional wooden villages of Batseri and Rakchham — stone alleys, carved doorways, and prayer flags.
Overnight in Sangla
Return to Sangla for dinner and overnight stay in a riverside camp or cozy homestay.
Drive to Chitkul
Make the short but spectacular 28 km drive from Sangla to Chitkul — the last inhabited village on the India-Tibet border.
Explore Chitkul
Wander the village lanes, visit the ancient Mathi temple, and walk to the border post. The Baspa river runs turquoise just below.
Lunch by the Baspa
Eat at one of Chitkul's small dhabas with views of snow peaks. Try Maggi, parathas, or local rajma-chawal.
Return to Sangla
Head back to Sangla, stopping for photos at meadow viewpoints along the way.
Drive to Reckong Peo
Descend from Sangla back to Karcham and drive up to Reckong Peo — the district headquarters of Kinnaur.
Inner Line Permit (if needed)
Collect or verify your Inner Line Permit at the DC office if heading beyond Peo towards Spiti.
Reach Kalpa
Arrive in Kalpa, a hilltop village offering the most iconic views of Kinnaur Kailash. Check into your accommodation.
Kalpa Sunset Walk
Walk along Kalpa's apple orchards and ancient temples as the Kinnaur Kailash peak blazes orange-gold in the setting sun.
