Sangla Valley
A lush green paradise carved by the Baspa River in the heart of Kinnaur
Trip Overview
What’s included in your Trip Culture experience
Sangla Valley — also called the Baspa Valley — is perhaps Himachal Pradesh's most beautiful valley: apple orchards climbing steep hillsides, the turquoise Baspa river roaring below, and ancient Kinnauri villages unchanged for centuries.
Sangla Valley is the valley of the Baspa river, a tributary of the Sutlej, stretching about 100 km from Karcham to Chitkul near the Tibet border. The valley is extraordinary in its greenness — a stark contrast to the barren Trans-Himalayan landscapes around it. Lush with apple, apricot, walnut, and wildflower meadows, it hosts some of Kinnaur's most beautifully preserved traditional wooden villages. Sangla village is the main hub, with the ancient Kamru Fort and Kamakhya Devi Temple rising dramatically above. Further up are Batseri and Rakchham — villages of stacked stone houses, carved wooden balconies, and prayer flags — before the valley climaxes at Chitkul, the last village before the Tibet border. The valley is also a photographer's paradise, especially during September–October when the apple orchards turn gold and the peaks are dusted with fresh snow.

Your 3-Day Itinerary
A carefully crafted journey designed to give you the best experience. Customize as per your preferences.
Depart Shimla
Early start on NH-5. The drive passes through Narkanda (apple country), Rampur Bushahr, and along the narrowing Sutlej gorge.
Karcham Turnoff
Turn off NH-5 at Karcham and enter the Baspa Valley. The road instantly changes — greener, wilder, and more dramatic.
Sangla Village
Arrive in Sangla. Check into your riverside camp or homestay, freshen up, and have a walk through the village orchards.
Kamru Fort
Climb the stone steps up to the iconic Kamru Fort — a multi-storey wooden and stone tower housing the Kamakhya Devi shrine. Views over the valley are superb.
Baspa Riverside Evening
Walk down to the Baspa riverbank for sunset. The turquoise water against the darkening peaks is one of Himachal's most beautiful sights.
Batseri Village Walk
Drive 7 km upstream to Batseri — one of Kinnaur's best-preserved traditional villages. Stone alleys, wooden balconies draped with drying apricots, and prayer wheels at every corner.
Apple Orchard Walk
Walk through the terraced apple orchards above Batseri. In September–October, you can pick apples directly from trees (ask the orchard owner first).
Lunch in Rakchham
Continue to Rakchham village for a simple lunch at a local dhaba or homestay. Try fresh rajma chawal or home-cooked dal.
Rakchham Exploration
Wander Rakchham's narrow lanes — the carved wooden houses here are among the finest examples of traditional Kinnauri architecture.
Return to Sangla Camp
Head back to Sangla. Bonfire and stargazing at the riverside camp in the evening.
Drive to Chitkul (28 km)
The drive from Sangla to Chitkul is 28 km of increasingly dramatic scenery — higher meadows, bare peaks, and the Baspa narrowing to a stream.
Chitkul Village
Explore Chitkul — its ancient Mathi temple, traditional wooden houses, and the famous 'Last Dhaba of India' sign near the border post.
Lunch at the Last Dhaba
Eat at one of Chitkul's tiny dhabas — Maggi, parathas, and chai with a view of the Baspa glacier above is an experience you won't forget.
Baspa Origin Walk
Walk further up the valley beyond the village to see the Baspa river's glacial origins. ITBP may restrict how far you can go near the border.
Return to Sangla
Begin the drive back — stop anywhere that catches your eye for photos. The late afternoon light on the valley is spectacular.
