Dharamshala
Home of the Dalai Lama, Tibetan culture, and Himalayan serenity
Trip Overview
What’s included in your Trip Culture experience
A twin town of spiritual energy and mountain adventure — Dharamshala is the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, home to thousands of monks, Israeli backpackers, and trekkers heading up to Triund.
Dharamshala is divided into Lower Dharamshala (the main town) and Upper Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj — the beating heart of Tibetan culture in India. Since the Dalai Lama established his residence here in 1960, McLeod Ganj has grown into a unique blend of Tibetan Buddhism, Indian Himalayan culture, and international backpacker scene. The Namgyal Monastery, the Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple), Tibetan Museum, and dozens of meditation centers draw spiritual seekers year-round. For adventure lovers, the Triund trek is one of Himachal's most accessible and rewarding high-altitude walks. Dharamkot above McLeod Ganj has become a yoga and meditation hub with a thriving café culture. The nearby Kangra Valley, with its ancient forts and temples, adds a rich historical dimension to any visit.

Your 3-Day Itinerary
A carefully crafted journey designed to give you the best experience. Customize as per your preferences.
Tsuglagkhang Complex
Start at the Dalai Lama Temple complex — the Namgyal Monastery, Tibet Museum, and Kalachakra Temple. Arrive early to avoid crowds and soak in the morning prayer sounds.
McLeod Ganj Market Walk
Stroll through the Tibetan market — thangka paintings, singing bowls, prayer flags, handwoven rugs, and Tibetan silver jewelry line the lanes.
Lunch at a Tibetan Café
Eat at Nick's Italian Kitchen or Lung Ta Restaurant — try fried momos, thukpa, or thenthuk noodle soup.
Bhagsu Nag Temple & Waterfall
Walk 2 km to the ancient Bhagsu Nag Shiva temple and continue to the Bhagsu waterfall. The café strip above the waterfall has great views.
Sunset at Dharamkot
Head up to Dharamkot village for sunset views over the Kangra Valley. Catch live music or a bonfire at one of the guesthouses.
Early Start from Dharamkot
Begin the Triund trek from Dharamkot. The trail passes through dense rhododendron and oak forests before emerging on the open ridge.
Triund Summit (2,828 m)
Reach the Triund ridge and be rewarded with a 270-degree panorama of the Dhauladhar range on one side and the Kangra Valley on the other.
Lunch at Magic View Dhaba
Have a hot meal at the dhaba on the ridge — the views while eating are genuinely unforgettable.
Snow Line (Optional)
Experienced trekkers can push further up towards the Snow Line camp (3,100 m) for even more dramatic glacier views.
Descend to McLeod Ganj
Descend back via the same trail to Dharamkot and McLeod Ganj. Total trek: 9 km round trip.
Norbulingka Institute
Visit this remarkable Tibetan arts and crafts institute in Sidhpur — see master craftsmen painting thangkas, sculpting bronze statues, and weaving. The Japanese-style garden is stunning.
Kangra Fort
One of India's oldest and largest forts, Kangra Fort was built by the Katoch dynasty and later captured by Mughals and Sikhs. The views of the Baner river gorge are dramatic.
Masrur Rock Temple
Drive to the 8th-century Masrur Temple — 15 monolithic rock-cut temples in the Himalayas, often called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. Surprisingly few tourists visit.
Return to Dharamshala
Head back to McLeod Ganj. Evening free for shopping, café-hopping, or a Vipassana introductory session at one of the many centers.
